Muscle endurance, strength and physical function
Evidence basis: randomised trials
Some muscle measures improved, but key primary functional outcomes did not.
Population: Older adults aged 65–90 years and middle-aged adults in four-month placebo-controlled trials.
Research details
Summary
A 66-person older-adult trial reported improved endurance measures but no significant improvement in six-minute walk distance or maximal ATP production compared with placebo. A middle-aged-adult trial reported strength changes but missed its primary peak-power outcome. The human review supports further research rather than proven restoration of everyday function or longevity.
Why this certainty
Limited because the trials are randomized but primary and secondary findings differ and independent long-term replication is lacking.
Limitations
Small samples, multiple secondary measures and short duration limit certainty. The trials had industry involvement, and biomarkers cannot establish longevity or independence in daily life.
